Experience with animals and own pets

I have always loved animals; I have been around them throughout my life growing up and whether they were dogs, cats, budgies or horses I saw them as part of my family and treated them as my fur or feather babies.

I was born into a completed little family where my mom already owned two beautiful dogs (A Border collie named Cleo and a German Shepard named Buddy), who were my friends and protectors (Especially Buddy) through my younger years. Sadly, age (as it does) got to them both and I suddenly found our family much smaller, and I (being an only child) felt the absence of my two best friends. My mom soon realised that I could not live without being around animals, I needed some best friends around at home to complete it.

One of my earliest and most fond memories was being taken to choose my new best friend at the SPCA, I had loved my doggies but since the Jungle Book was my current movie of the month (I was 3 at the time), I was obsessed with cats, and I would accept nothing other than a black panther like Bagheera (Even if it was a small one) – and that’s how I met CC (Claire’s Cat – I insisted in this name as I wanted everyone to know she was mine).

CC stayed by my side, on my lap and on my bed for the next 18 years, she moved to Cape Town then Durban and back home to Gauteng with me and was always there making the house a better home and lighting up my life, she was my first and true fur baby and I still feel her absence today. A couple of years after I welcomed my CC into the house, I managed to convince my mom that I needed a puppy – keeping in theme with my love of animations I got Purdy (Named after 101 Dalmatians but she was a golden spaniel like Lady, in Lady and the Tramp) from the SPCA. Purdy, like CC was with me for our adventures to new places, she was a real baby who was happiest when I carried her around, dressed her up and pampered her – A real princess! Purdy was with me for 16 years and like CC, I still miss her dearly.

I have mentioned that I have had other fur and feather babies; they sadly didn’t last as long as my CC and Purdy, but I loved them just as much. I was so lucky to have Monchichi, a beautiful Chestnut Thoroughbred horse when I was in my tweens, she also made the move to Cape Town and Durban with me but she was so very happy in Durban and two little girls were learning to ride on her and loved her so very much, so my mom and I made the hard decision to let them keep her. I have had budgies (Jack and Jill) that always filled the house with chirps, two gorgeous kittens (Ming and Mulan) that sadly were sickly since birth and my Kep, he was a border collie with tons of energy and who I was learning to train in puppy school – truly beautiful and a joy to play with. Sadly my darling Kep was taken too soon when he was killed by a car while on a walk when I was away (He pulled off the leash in an effort to chase a cat he didn’t recognise – since only CC had a pass in his eyes, every other cat was for chasing)

Throughout my school years I had often volunteered at the SPCA – if we were ever required to do any type of community service I would always choose animals. I must say it was quite hard at times to be there but to see that there were good people, who loved animals looking after these ones who had no home, giving them some security, full bellies and a lot of love whenever they could, is truly rewarding. It was for this reason that I always chose my fur babies and best friends at the SPCA. Once CC and Purdy were gone, I spent a few sad years at varsity without any animals at home – since I was at Res and I only came home on the weekends it didn’t seem fair to leave a new baby alone for that long. Once I had completed my honours and was about to start my first job, I knew it was time to liven up the house a bit (I was staying home full time with my mom in order to save up). So once again I visited the SPCA for my next fur baby, and that’s when I met Delilah (A very spoilt Tabby) – she is the new light of my life and my real little baby. I had decided on a kitten since cats are my mom’s main preference, and I had missed having a cat around (Especially that soothing sound of their purring!)

Delilah is now 6 years old but will always be my baby and now also my study buddy (I have since quit working in order to study Medicine at Wits) – She sits with me for hours either on my lap, or on my files just keeping me company in the stressful times when exams are looming. If Purdy was my princess, Delilah is most definitely my Queen – It has been a true joy to have her with me (And sometimes hard work) from when she just fit into my hand to now when she takes up virtually my entire torso.

I am always happiest when there are pets around, I believe that they are not just there to entertain your children or guard your house – They are members of the family and should always be treated as such, they are our best friends, children, protectors and earth’s angels and I look forward to helping look after any of them!
