Experience with animals and own pets

Pets and animals have always had a special place in my heart, from an early age I have always loved to be around all the animals that I could, just like I do now.

When we are children the influences of those around you play a significant role in the person you become and mould into. In my early youth and from as long as I can remember, my family has been very nature- and animal orientated. My dad, being from England, had a lot of family that came to visit us here in South Africa. They loved it here because of the green lands, the wide variety of wild animals and hot sunny weather that we have here. We would always go to see the diverse kinds of animals with them while they were staying here. All this shaped my initial love for animals and made me respect lives other than my own and those of humans.

When I was young and growing up, my family had two German Shepherd dogs, Duke and Lady. They were so special to me and taught me so much. They were gentle and friendly to my sister and I even though they were such large dogs compared to how small and fragile we were! They were the first animals that I encountered, and this was one of the main foundations to my love for animals, especially dogs.

My neighbour’s pets also played a role in the shaping of my love for all animals as when some of them would go on holiday, we would feed and take care of their pets, which was certainly a dream for a young child. My one neighbour had seven Jack Russells and playing with them every day was most certainly one of the best memories that I had around animals and pets.

When I was young I would always help animals in need, whether it be finding birds in the garden while I was playing outside and trying to help them because of broken wings, to finding dogs in the street and taking them home to care for it until I found the owners.

In earlier memories: In grade one our teacher had an assignment for us where we had to take care of the teacher’s class hamster for a week, this was to see how we would deal with taking care of another life (that was not human) and how well we could handle the animal/pet and the situation. This had jobs including feeding the hamster, cleaning its cage, etc. this was a test and learning experience that taught us many important values that could only be taught through the experience put forward. It was a great lesson that I was lucky to learn at such an early/immature age and given the opportunity to do.

Through looking back at all these memories and experiences, I will always do my best to protect and ensure the safety of the animals and pets that need it. Animals need love and care in this world and it takes only a few people to change others to realize this. Animals need us just like we need them, they can sense things we cannot, and they can help us through the toughest of times. We must understand this and do our best in this world to love and protect all that need it. I do not know what this world would be like without the animals and pets we have!
