We are so excited to present to you May 2019’s Pet of the Month – the gorgeous Tyson! This little firecracker has the sweetest little quirks and will instantly steal your heart with his charm.
Tyson nominated by his StudentCo sitter, Lize-Mari Geelhuizen. This is what she had to say in her nomination:
“This stay over was last minute as Tyson’s poor mom landed up in the hospital and urgently needed someone to look after him. I’m so happy that I was able to help out – he is just so cute!
He was so sad when I got there. You could obviously see that missed his mom, but he warmed up to me quite quickly and followed me around everywhere. He is so spoiled and a true lover of chicken and cuddles!”
Mom, Stienie, was so excited to hear that her boy had been chosen as our Pet of the Month and took the time to answer these exciting questions about her baby, Tyson.
Everyone loves a good origin story – how did Tyson become part of the Schoeman clan?
“My grandchildren wanted desperately to get a kitten, so of course my husband and I were involved and were persuaded to take them to a pet shop in Kempton Park. Seeing their joy made me think of the child-like joy a pet brings and after the passing of our previous Jack Russell, Thabo, I too wanted a fur baby. So we sought out to get one and low and behold found a home in Kempton Park with Jack Russell’s up for adoption.
The choice to make was hard at first but a small baby caught my eye near the shed. He was sitting with his head facing the wall, as if his pack had abandoned him, and I had made up my mind. This baby was coming home with the Schoeman clan!“
Naming our fur kids is always fun – how did you choose the name Tyson?
“Having been a lover of boxing, my husband noticed that this pupper had his professional game face on while sitting, facing the shed, as if working his strategy. This reminded him of one of his favourite boxers of all time, Mike Tyson, and thus came the name Tyson. Never let his face fool you! For on the inside lies a pupper that can KILL you with his kisses!”
Does he have any unique quirks or habits that can’t help but make you smile?
“Tyson loves having tea time with me! He would never pass up the opportunity to sit with his mother and enjoy a cup of tea every afternoon! But the thing that makes me laugh more than anything is that he will stand on his hind legs and ask for the tea and a biscuit every now and then. The biscuit also has to be dipped in the tea to soften it, of course!
Would you describe Tyson as adventurous or laid-back?
“If by adventurous you mean chasing a fly endlessly around the house for hours on end and barking up a storm when he sees a frog entering the house, then yes, he is VERY adventurous. If that is not your idea of adventure, then he would rather enjoy lounging around the house, sleeping all day and sleeping all night!“
As pet parents we’re not allowed to have favourites, but who is Tyson’s favourite human?
“His mother, of course! He enjoys snuggling up to me in the cold winter months and who else, rather than the person that feeds him non-stop, to be his favourite Hooman?”
His favourite food is…
“Tyson is a lover of chicken necks and basically anything that his mother eats. However, if you think for one second that you can just place any item of food in front of him you are mistaken! Unless it is presented to him on either his own plate or the same plate that I have eaten out of, he will not go near it!”
His favourite StudentCo Pet Sitter is…
“Lize-Marie, by far!”
Any funny stories or memories you think other pet parents would enjoy?
“My grand-daughter has a Pomeranian named Nova. Now, since Nova was a small puppy she would have play dates with Tyson! She would often chase him around the house, jumping on couches, running underneath chairs and anywhere you could think of – they would just knock everything out of place. This was, however, halted when Tyson realised that Nova could not jump up onto the bed. The bed became his safe haven.
Anytime Nova would come over, he would run around for a while and when he grew tired of her, would jump onto the bed to escape her antics! However, Nova has grown quite a bit since then, and the next time she went for a play date with Tyson, she followed him up onto the bed and this look of betrayal just flooded Tyson’s face. He just stood there in silence and confusion for a few seconds and then just shoved Nova off of the bed!“
