StudentCo Pet Sitter Profile

If you like this profile, remember the name "Nicole L" and simply click here to tell us more about your pets and when you will need a sitter. StudentCo will let you know if this pet sitter is available (if not, you will be introduced to another, equally awesome, team member).

The next step is the meet-and-greet. This is an informal meeting at your home so you (and your pets!) can get to know a potential sitter. You are invited to discuss your needs and expectations openly, and then decide whether you would like to proceed with a booking. The meet-and-greet is 100% cost and obligation-free and will be arranged for a time that suits you.

Experience with animals and own pets

Before deciding to start studying veterinary science, I completed a BSc in Zoology and Microbiology and an MSc in Veterinary Parasitology. After this, I worked at the National Zoo in PTA which took me on field trips working with both domestic and wild animals. After this, I worked in the Kalahari desert at the Kalahari Meerkat Project working with wild meerkat groups on a daily basis. Being outside in this environment daily naturally exposes you to a variety of other wildlife. I have also worked at a baboon rehabilitation center close to Phalaborwa which entailed direct contact with baboons of all ages every day as well as for the Cape Peninsula Baboon Research Unit in the Tokai forest of Cape Town. Furthermore, during my first undergraduate degree I was a part-time volunteer at the Grahamstown SPCA where I walked dogs, cleaned dog enclosures and assisted on the donkey project, where we groomed donkeys and gave them new horse shoes when necessary. I have great compassion for animals and nothing makes me happier than working with them, hence my decision to do a veterinary degree.

I have grown up in an animal-loving home where dogs and cats have ruled the roost. During my lifetime between my immediate family members and I we have owned four cats, eleven dogs, five hamsters, three rats, goldfish and guinea pigs, all of whom I have loved dearly and cared for. My younger sister is a horse rider and has three horses which live with her and my dad on my dad’s smallholding in the Eastern Cape. I have also owned a bearded dragon. My sister’s cat, who we always joked was the man of the house, has recently moved to New York City with her and her husband and so my mom and I alongside our four female dogs make up the matriarchal household!

I am a strong believer in adopting rather than buying bred animals since there are SO many that need homes. In my first year of university I ended up buying two puppies from a homeless man who was selling them along the side of the street. They were in a terrible condition and with a lot of tender loving care I managed to revive them physically and emotionally. Their names are Zuri-Jane and Bobby and are my babies. Zuri is a Basset cross Sheepdog (I think!) and bobby is an Africanis. These two pups are now 7 years old and moved to my dad’s smallholding two years ago since I was moving around so much for work. They love the open space the property offers and are spoilt rotten. Although I would love them to move to PTA with me I feel that it would be unfair to move them again, and since they are so happy they are going to stay on the farm!

In my home my pets are allowed on my bed and other furniture. However I have house sat for many other people who do not allow this which I totally respect!

I know Nicole from the time she was doing her MSc at the University of Pretoria. I have come to know her as a very friendly and open person who is very dedicated in everything she does. Nicole absolutely loves animals, all sizes, ages and shapes. She has house-sat and looked after my dog Charlie many a time and always does a wonderful job. Nicole is by far Charlie's favourite auntie! She would be an excellent candidate for this job.
