Experience with animals and own pets

I love animals, especially dogs. When I was 9, my dad got me a dog, 21st March 2007. I will never forget this day. At the sound of me opening the gate, here came this little adorable Labrador Retriever running towards me, causing me to get all sorts of excited.

Lucky was my first experience of taking care of a pet. I loved, fed, bathed, walked, played and cleaned up after him. My love for animals really developed then and I would offer to walk the dogs of my neighbours when I was walking Lucky.

Unfortunately, in late 2011, Lucky died after suffering a head injury inflicted while attacking an intruder. I did not get another pet after Lucky but my love for animals was also already firmly entrenched by then and I catered to this love by occasionally looking after the neighbour’s dog (e.g. giving the pets food when I return from school). My best friend as well as my cousin both had cats and even though I was a dog person then, the little furries won my heart.

When I got to university, I joined outreach programs which helped me continue interacting with animals. We would often go to the SPCA and play with the animals, amongst other things. The best part of this experience is that the SPCA ground staff was always willing to answer questions and gave information about the animals which has proven to be invaluable (e.g. how to connect with strays or previously abused animals).
